Key facts for Canadian fathers
- •Canada has no dedicated "paternity leave" — fathers access parental leave through Employment Insurance (EI), which can be shared with the other parent.
- •Under standard EI parental benefits, parents share 40 weeks at 55% of insurable earnings (up to a maximum). Under extended benefits, they share 69 weeks at 33%.
- •Quebec is the exception: the Quebec Parental Insurance Plan (QPIP) provides 5 weeks of exclusive paternity benefits that cannot be transferred to the mother.
- •To qualify for EI parental benefits, you generally need 600 insurable hours of work in the past 52 weeks.
- •Many provinces offer additional family support programs. Contact your provincial government or a local Family Service Canada agency for local resources.
